Head, Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries

As the result of a collision between a Car, Truck, or Train, Work accident, and other serious incidents, an innocent party may experience a Head, Brain, or Spinal Cord Injury.

These injuries can occur when the individual strikes their head against a window, the interior of the vehicle, the seat-back, an object striking their head, falling down and striking something hard, or being hit. These injuries can be life altering depending on their severity.

A Head injury consists of an injury to the scalp, skull, or brain and may be visible through a bruise or bump on the head. It can be divided into two types: A closed head injury or an open head injury. A closed head injury means the head was struck by an object but did not break the skull. An open head injury means the head was struck by an object that broke the skull and potentially entered the brain.

A Spinal Cord injury occurs when the spinal cord experiences a blow that fractures or dislocates your vertebrae. The spinal cord is the bundle of nerves that runs down the back and carries signals between your brain and body. This type of injury can result in paralysis or loss movement and sensation.

A Brain injury occurs when the head experiences a blow that affects the brain. A brain injury can be divided into two categories: Acquired Brain Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury.

  • An Acquired brain injury can be the result of a stroke, tumor, epilepsy, infections, anoxia, and exposure to toxic chemicals.

  • An external force resulting in head trauma or the rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head causes a Traumatic Brain injury. These injuries can be divided into a closed or open head injury as described above. A Brain injury disrupts the brain’s normal function and can result in brain damage.

    • Symptoms of a mild/moderate brain injury may cause headaches, confusion, memory loss, loss of balance and coordination, and nausea.

    • Symptoms of a severe brain injury can cause neurological issues, vision problems, paralysis, behavioral changes, and disruption to the cognitive process.

Head, Spinal Cord, and Brain injuries severely affect an injured person's ability to carry out daily activities and may have a lifelong impact on the person injured.
